Can your elderly loved no longer live independently? Are you uncomfortable with the idea of a larger assisted living community? If so, one of the many senior assisted living homes in San Diego County may be a better fit.
But how do you find the right one?
Senior assisted living homes are also called board and care homes or residential care homes. And we have hundreds of them in San Diego County.
In a senior assisted living home, residents receive the same assistance with day to day activities as in a large facility. The main difference is size and ratio of caregiver to senior.
A senior assisted living home is a house in a residential neighborhood. These care homes are licensed and staffed to provide the care your loved one needs in a comfortable environment that feels like home.
Residential care homes in the state of California are licensed by the Community Care Licensing Division of the Department of Social Services. This is also the same license all larger care communities have.
Does Your Loved One Need a San Diego Senior Assisted Living Home?
If your elderly loved one has limited mobility or has dementia (some exceptions), you may want to visit several San Diego residential care homes. The more visits you make, the better you’ll feel about your final decision.
A board and care home provides the same care as a large assisted living community. However, because of their small size the care provided can be more personalized.
Are Senior Assisted Living Homes Right for Your Loved One?
A senior care home in San Diego may be appropriate for your loved one if they:
- Need daily hands on assistance getting dressed, showering, walking around, or using the toilet
- Have limited mobility
- Have dementia and do not wander or have negative behaviors
Like all assisted living licensed places, large and small, residential care homes provide non-medical care.
If your loved one needs continuous medical care such as injections, a nursing home may be needed. I can explain the differences.
Is a San Diego board and care home or a larger assisted living community best for your loved one?
There are distinct advantages to both types of care facility. The most appropriate option for your loved one will be determined by environment, level of care, cost and family preference.

What Should You Look For In A Small Assisted Living Home?
Because a board and care home is an intimate setting, it’s important to find the right fit. The environment, staff, and functioning level of other residents may vary greatly from home to home.
Does the care home have residents with dementia? Do they have women or men, or both? Does the home have private bathrooms? Do they have any vacancies?
There are hundreds of senior assisted living homes throughout San Diego County. Searching for the right board and care home can be very confusing and time consuming.

I came across Lise after dealing with several other senior consultants, all of whom were either located out of town or not at all in tune with what I was looking for.
Lise was a “breath of fresh air”, taking the time and patience to learn about my parents and their needs.
She saved me LITERALLY hours upon hours of time and effort by providing me referrals to senior homes that met my criteria.
To say that she knows the San Diego senior market and is very well connected thereto would be an understatement!
At all times, her ONLY concern was getting my parents located in a place that was best for them, and for our family!
I recommend Lise without reservation. You may contact me for a reference/further information about my experience at any time.
Lisa found my mother in law a palace to live in for her final days. Give us tons of information and basically took us through the whole process all without charging a dime. She seems to know everything about everyone of the homes in this area and answered all of our questions at least twice (sorry about that part Lisa 🙂 Some of them on a Sunday afternoon (sorry about that too Lisa)
The place told us they were giving us a discount because they really like her (Lisa that is) which is awesome. Thank you so much for helping my dying relative find such a perfect place to spend what little time she has left.
There is no one better than Lise when it comes to placing a loved one. I have not seen anyone work harder and never give up on the more difficult cases. Being in Senior Care myself you learn quickly who you can trust, and I trust Lise more than any other Senior Care adviser out there!
