The Difference Between Assisted Living and Board and Care Homes
As our loved ones get older, care outside the home could be in their future. Then the question becomes, what should that care look like?
Board and care homes and assisted living facilities are the most common options.
They are similar in that they both carry the same license, but beyond this they are quite different.
When thinking of assisted living, families usually people think of larger facilities, as they are more available and well known. But board and care homes can be a better choice for many seniors, especially as they get older and more frail.
Board and care homes have a much smaller number of residents than assisted living communities. Board and care homes are houses with private or shared bedrooms and in many cases, shared bathrooms. They usually care for just six seniors.
With this small population, care can be more personal and hands on.
Assisted living communities will have more amenities and activities. They usually have larger “campuses” and common areas such as fitness rooms, lounges, libraries, theaters, outside spaces and sometimes swimming pools.
Board and Care usually have two caregivers for just six seniors, so your loved one will get more personal care. They rarely have the amenities that can be found in larger facilities, but for many seniors in their later stage of life, those amenities are not necessary.

Do the residents seem content? Are the care givers engaged with them and attentive to their needs?
Are meals prepared fresh and tasty?
Does the home appear safe? Does the bathroom have grab bars? Are medications kept locked?
If your loved one has dementia and is ambulatory, are the doors and windows secured?
